WHEELING, W.Va. -- Davis & Elkins softball got back in the win colum with a doubleheader road sweep of Wheeling on Sunday, winning by scores of 5-3 and 10-3.
Lilly Saucedo went 6-for-8 at the plate on the day, adding a double and home run in game two with a pair of RBI for Davis & Elkins (9-13).
Kristen Malloy smacked five RBI in the second game, collecting the first three-hit game of the season.
Game One
Davis & Elkins jumped ahead 4-0 in the first game, capped by a home run from
Maddie Lavelle, before Wheeling pushed across three runs in the sixth.
Honesty Holt reached first on an error, allowing
Elyse Enriquez to score for the insurance marker at 5-3.
Jenna Evans logged another complete game in the circle, tossing seven innings and surrendering eight hits and three runs with nine strikeouts. Saucedo went 3-for-4 at the dish as
Haley Grindstaff and Lavelle collected two hits each for D&E.
Consecutive one out singles from
Kailynn Parks and Saucedo put two runners on for Grindstaff, who labeled a 2-2 pitch to center for the 1-0 lead in the first inning.
Sharon Morales added the Senators' second run of the frame with an RBI single to center, swinging on the first pitch, scoring Saucedo.
Evans took over from there, firing scoreless frames over the first five innings. D&E pushed its lead to 3-0 on a double from Holt in the fifth before widening the margin to 4-0 on Lavelle's fifth home run of the season.
Wheeling countered back with a three-run shot to left center in the sixth, climbing back in the game at 4-3.
Game Two
D&E racked up its 10 runs over the last four innings in a game two triumph. Morales, Saucedo and Malloy all smacked home runs for D&E.
Grindstaff earned the win with five innings in the circle, allowing just two runs, before Evans came on for the save. Malloy went 3-for-5 at the plate with five RBI, including the three-run homer in the sixth. Saucedo notched three more hits in game two with two RBI and Parks added two knocks.
Neither side could break through over the first three innings before Morales lifted D&E ahead with a solo homer in the fourth. Wheeling answered in the home half, tying the game at one, before Saucedo broke the tie in a big way with a two-run shot to left as D&E moved ahead 3-1.
D&E kept the hit parade going as Malloy launched a three-run homer in the fifth as D&E led 6-2. The Senators notched four more runs in the seventh, loading the bases and capitalizing with a walk and run-scoring singles from
Morgan Tandarich and Malloy.
