Women's Lacrosse Closes Out Charleston (W.Va.)

ELKINS, W.Va. -- Davis & Elkins women's lacrosse locked things down defensively in the second half on its way to a 12-9 home triumph and season sweep of Charleston (W.Va.) on Wednesday evening at a soggy Nuttall Field.

Davis & Elkins (5-2) received some timely stops in the second half from Marissa Cuevas, while Hanna Bond rifled home the game-winner with 20 minutes left. Emily Smith scored four goals on six shots with Bond adding three tallies and a pair of assists.

Paige Graff and Courtnie Couch found the back of the net twice as D&E went into the halftime break tied with Charleston (3-7). The Senators locked up a berth in the MEC Tournament with a victory, pushing their record to 3-0 at Nuttall Field this season.

The Golden Eagles outshot the Senators by a 28-18 margin while holding a 22-12 edge in ground balls.

UC opened up a 2-0 margin before the Senators answered back to tie the score. A three-goal swing for D&E made it 5-3 before the Golden Eagles roared back with five consecutive markers for an 8-5 edge.

D&E used a 6-0 spurt, spanning into the second half to take the lead for good.

Cuevas made a diving save around five minutes into the second half, racing back into her crease off a turnover to keep the score knotted at eight. Quick tallies for Paige Graff and Bond pushed the lead to 10-8 as D&E never looked back.

D&E is back home on Saturday, April 17 for a rematch with Notre Dame (Ohio) at 2:00 PM.
