Davis & Elkins Softball Upended at WV State on Sunday

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – Davis & Elkins softball hit the road for the second time this weekend, falling to West Virginia State in doubleheader action. The Senators dropped game one 3-0 before falling in game two by a 12-4 count on Sunday afternoon.

Looking to bounce back from a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Charleston (W.Va.), Davis & Elkins (7-11) struggled to get the bats going in game one.

Honesty Holt and Lilly Saucedo smacked back-to-back hits for the Senators in the fourth, but could not push any runs across.

Jenna Evans took the loss in the circle today for D&E, collecting four strikeouts on the afternoon in the opening game.

Trailing 1-0 in the nightcap, Davis & Elkins took its first lead in the third on a two-run blast by Saucedo. It was the fourth home run of the season for Saucedo, who lifted the Senators ahead 2-1.

West Virginia State (18-8, 15-3 MEC) tied it up in the home half with a run-scoring single to knot things at three.

D&E plated its final two runs in the top of the fifth following a single from Kailynn Parks and a sacrifice fly from Maddie Lavelle. WVSU roared back with 10 runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the contest with a 12-4 run-rule victory.

D&E returns to action with a pair of road doubleheaders against West Liberty (April 17) and Wheeling (April 18).
