BUCKHANNON, W.Va. -- Davis & Elkins women's lacrosse never trailed in a 14-3 road victory against West Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon at Ross Field.
Davis & Elkins (2-0) used a balanced attack, peppering West Virginia Wesleyan (0-2) with 37 shots on the soggy afternoon.
Emily Smith scored four goals on nine shots, adding five ground balls and two caused turnovers.
The Senators were active on defense as WVWC committed 29 turnovers on the day. D&E caused 14 turnovers as a team and blistered 16 free position shots.
Paige Graff added three of goals and passed out a pair of assists for the Senators, while
Taylor Baker scored twice on two shots.
Marissa Cuevas had two saves in goal and four Senators had three ground balls.
The Senators took control early, dictating the pace for much of the opening half both in possession and on the scoreboard. D&E held a 6-1 margin at the intermission after scoring the first five goals of the contest.
Baker found the back of the net less than five minutes into the game before striking for her second goal of the afternoon at 21:08 for a 2-0 lead.
Angelina Horan raced into the slot for a free-position tally at 19:02 as D&E led 3-0.
Courtnie Couch spun into her first goal of the season, coming at 8:15 for a 4-0 lead. Later, Graff converted for her fifth tally of the season at 6:04. WVWC got on the board before Smith buried a feed from Graff for a 6-1 advantage.
Cuevas made one save in the opening half as the Senators limited the Bobcats to just four shots in the opening 30 minutes. Smith, Graff and
Ryann Sumner all scored in the second half to push ahead 9-2.
Hanna Bond scored along the right side for her first of the season, extending the lead to 11-2 with 8:17 left.
Haley Leavines placed an accurate shot to the top right corner for a 12-2 edge, which started the running clock. Graff buried a pass from Couch to move back ahead by 10 at 13-3.
Davis & Elkins returns to action on Wednesday, March 31 for its home opener against Alderson Broaddus at 6:00 PM.
