FROSTBURG, Md. – Davis & Elkins softball fell short in both ends of a doubleheader to Frostburg State on Saturday at Bobcat Field. The Senators fell in game one, 6-4, before dropping the second game by a narrow 1-0 count.
Haley Grindstaff and
Kristen Malloy had a pair of knocks each, including a double and home run for Malloy, to pace the Senators. In the circle, Grindstaff fired six innings while allowing just one run with three punchouts in the nightcap.
Game One
After a pair of scoreless frame, Davis & Elkins jumped ahead to a 2-0 advantage following a two-RBI double from
Kailynn Parks, scoring
Elyse Enriquez and starting pitcher
Jenna Evans.
Lilly Saucedo pushed the Senator lead to 3-0 as the next batter to the plate, scoring Parks with a double of her own.
Malloy homered to extend the lead to 4-0 in the fifth inning. Frostburg rallied in the six, which included four run-scoring doubles, to roar back for a 6-4 lead over the visiting Senators.
Evans fanned eight in 5.1 innings, allowing four runs (two earned) and just four hits.
Ava Willis surrendered a pair of runs in 0.2 innings of relief.
D&E went down in order in the seventh as Frostburg held on to its 6-4 lead.
Game Two
A contest that featured just four combined hits, the starting pitchers were locked in during the second game. Both starters went the distance, with Frostburg's Shawna Leonard firing a 14-strikeout complete game.
Meanwhile, Grindstaff allowed just two hits in her six innings of work.
A single in the fourth handed the Bobcats all the offense they needed for a 1-0 lead.
