WHEELING, W.Va. – Davis & Elkins men's lacrosse used a big first quarter en route to a 16-9 road win against Wheeling on Saturday night.
Davis & Elkins (1-1) opened up a 7-1 edge after the opening frame and kept pace with Wheeling (1-4) for the remainder of the night.
Tyler Kolodka had four goals and three assists and teammate
Nolan Morrison added seven points of his own with three goals and four helpers.
Bryce McBee posted four markers for the Senators, while
Zach Lontayao and
Jackson Woodworth added two each.
David Thorne Jr. made nine saves in goal for the Senators, who collected their first victory since April 11, 2019 against Alderson Broaddus. The 16 goals in a game are the most for D&E since February 26 of last season against UDC.
The Senators held the edge in shots (38-34), shots on goal (24-18) and saves (9-8). Wheeling posted a commanding 21-4 in faceoffs and closed the half with the last three tallies.
With the score tied at one, Davis & Elkins rattled off the next six goals to end the opening quarter. Kolodka scored three of them and assisted on another, while McBee and
Zach Lontayao also found the back of the net.
The run continued into the second as D&E ballooned the lead to 11-1 following goals from Brandon Pacheco, Morrison, Lontayao and Kolodka. Wheeling responded with the next three to make it 11-4 at the intermission.
McBee stopped the Wheeling run in the second half with a man-up goal for a 12-6 edge.
Jackson Woodworth finished a feed from Kolodka for the final scoring play of the third, increasing the D&E lead to 14-8.
The Senators held a 2-1 edge in scoring in the final period to preserve the victory.
Davis & Elkins is back in action on Wednesday, March 31 for a road clash at Walsh beginning at noon.
