Senators Bow Out of MEC Tournament With Loss to Fairmont State

INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- Davis & Elkins volleyball fell in straight sets to Fairmont State in the Mountain East Conference (MEC) Semifinals on Friday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED  
  • Davis & Elkins opened a 7-3 lead to start the match before the Falcons battled back to tie the frame at 12. Jandris placed down a kill for a 17-16 edge and a swing from Magallon made it 23-20, forcing a Fairmont State timeout. The Falcons fired the next three points to tie the frame at 23 and force the Senators into a timeout of their own.  
  • Magallon had a kill to tie the set at 24 but a pair of kills for Fairmont State handed the top seed from the MEC North an extended 26-24 win in set one.  
  • Mintschenko notched a kill that tied the second set at four before Fairmont took a narrow lead in the set. Candiota tied the set at 13 with a kill, but Fairmont State pulled ahead 19-14. A 5-1 run for the Senators, which featured kills from four different players, made it 24-22. Amelia Moore placed a kill down the middle to end the frame for the Falcons.  
  • D&E roared out to an 8-4 lead in the third set, keyed by a trio of kills from Mintschenko. Fairmont State responded with a 7-1 surge to move ahead 11-9A kill from Magallon followed by consecutive aces from Manchego tied the set at 14.  
  • A 4-0 surge from Fairmont State put the Senators down 20-16, forcing a timeout on the floor. Amaya Morales delivered a big kill out of the timeout and Mintschenko followed up with a kill of her own to trim the deficit to 20-18. FSU locked in once again, posting the next five points to seal the match.
