Volleyball Cruises Past Glenville State in Doubleheader Sweep

ELKINS, W.Va. – Davis & Elkins volleyball made short work of visiting Glenville State with two sweeps inside the McDonnell Center on Saturday afternoon.
 
Davis & Elkins (6-1) took the first match in set scores of 25-12, 25-15, 25-10 before capping the sweep with a match two victory in set scores of 25-15, 25-17, 25-10.
 
Saturday's doubleheader was due to a shift in the schedule earlier this season.

TEAM LEADERS
  • Macie Magallon combined for 21 kills on the day, hitting .474 in the opening match of the day.
  • Brilane Manchego finished the day with 62 assists and Brianna Portley fired in 14 kills as part of a balanced effort for the Senators.
  • Molly Jandris combined for 16 kills and 16 digs over the course of the afternoon.
  • Mya Mintschenko had 12 kills on the day, posting eight in the second match to go along with four block assists.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED – MATCH ONE
  • Davis & Elkins opened up a 4-0 lead in the first set and posted seven consecutive points for a 16-6 lead. Portley, Manchego and Magallon had kills in the run and Cynthia Arango dropped in a service ace. The Senators maintained their big lead to take the set, 25-12.
  • Glenville notched three points for a 5-3 lead but the Senators worked their way back for a 7-6 advantage. Kills from Magallon and Luann O'Kane jumpstarted a 6-1 spurt as D&E led 13-8.
  • Another 6-1 scoring run pushed the D&E lead to 22-13 and Magallon ultimately capped the set with a kill.
  • Manchego helped carry the Senators at the service line and open up a 7-0 advantage in the third set. Another run, this time five consecutive points, lifted D&E ahead 18-5. Amaya Morales had back-to-back kills and Mariah Autobee concluded the match with an ace.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED – MATCH TWO
  • The Senators charged ahead 7-3 to open the second match before Glenville answered with four points of its own. A 10-1 burst from the hosts, including a pair of kills from Mintschenko, swelled the D&E edge to 21-11. Portley laced down a kill from Manchego to end the opening set.
  • The second set was closely contested at the start, tied at six before D&E started to pull away. Four straight kills for D&E made it 14-7 and the Senators held off a late push from the Pioneers to emerge victories in the frame, 25-17.
  • Jandris, Mintschenko and Magallon all put down kills as part of an 8-0 start to the third set. A 6-0 run quickly made it 16-4 and the Senators capped the set at 25-10 off a kill from Mary Carosella. Kylianne Philip assisted on the final two kills of the day for D&E.
 
UP NEXT
  • Davis & Elkins hots the road for a crucial matchup with West Virginia State on Tuesday, March 2 at 7:00 PM.
  • The Senators knocked off a depleted Yellow Jacket side, 3-1, earlier this season in Elkins.
