BECKLEY, W.Va. -- Davis & Elkins men's soccer controlled play throughout the afternoon and was rewarded with an
Anderson Marroquin marker in double overtime, pushing the Senators to an exciting 1-0 season-opening win against Concord.
Davis & Elkins (1-0-0) held a decisive 14-3 margin in shots and placed eight balls on frame. Marroquin stormed ahead and slotted a ball to the lower right side of the net to hand D&E the victory. Sunday's win was the first at Davis & Elkins for head coach
Dean Johnson, who took over the men's soccer program back in January 2020 and had to wait over a calendar year to coach in his first game.
Jeremy Coste made a pair of saves in 104 minutes of action and the D&E defense limited Concord (0-0-1) to just three shots on the afternoon. The game had a combined five yellow cards and 25 fouls.
The Senators held a 9-1 edge in corner kicks and had an early shot from
Martin Lago denied in the 13th minute. D&E continued mounting the pressure, launching six more attempts over the next 13 minutes of play. Coste stopped a Daniel Culverwell attempt in the 35th minute to keep the game scoreless at the intermission.
Marroquin and
Daniel Cerezo worked into position for quality looks in the 48th and 53rd minutes, respectively, but could not beat the Mountain Lions' keeper. The Senators kept up the offensive intensity but could not break the scoreless tie in regulation.
CU had the first chance in the overtime session with a wide attempt in the 92nd minute before
David Jara ripped one wide about one minute later. Coste was up to the task one more time, smothering a shot from Robbie Stiles in the second overtime before Marroquin capped the game with his first goal in a D&E uniform.
Davis & Elkins returns to action on Friday, February 25 for a home matchup with Alderson Broaddus at 5:00 PM.
