Volleyball Comeback Falls Short in Five Set Road Loss to West Virginia Wesleyan

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. -- Davis & Elkins battled back in the fourth set in impressive fashion but West Virginia Wesleyan took the match in a deciding fifth set on Friday night.

Davis & Elkins (3-1) was playing its first match since February 9 and 
rallied down 24-19 in the fourth frame. Macie Magallon recorded a match-high 22 kills to pace D&E and Molly Jandris added eight kills, three aces and 12 digs. Brilane Manchego had an all-around night, posting six kills, 13 digs and 39 assists for the Senators.

West Virginia Wesleyan (3-2) was paced by Emily Doyle's 15 kills. Payton Hefner handed out 23 assists and Autumn 
Molenhouse notched 21 digs for the Bobcats.

WVWC had nine aces on the night and held a slight 56-49 edge in kills. The Senators had 39 errors and just 42 kills, hitting .099 on the night.

Set One:
 West Virginia Wesleyan 25, Davis & Elkins 22
Davis & Elkins battled back from a sluggish start, taking a 16-13 lead. West Virginia Wesleyan answered with a surge of its own, ultimately taking the set, 25-23

WVWC capped the frame with a 9-2 spurt to take the early lead in the match.


Set Two: 
Davis & Elkins 25, West Virginia Wesleyan 21

An 8-2 Wesleyan run put the hosts in front early before D&E chipped away at the lead. Davis & Elkins called a timeout, trailing 14-11 and responded with the next three points to knot the frame at 14.

Brianna Portley fired a kill in that s
tretch as part of a larger surge that lifted D&E ahead 21-18. Magallon recorded consecutive kills after Jandris placed down a pair of service aces to force a timeout from the hosts. The Senators won four of the final six points to cap the second set and tie the match at one.

Set Three: 
West Virginia Wesleyan 25, Davis & Elkins 19

West Virginia Wesleyan took control early in the third set, taking a 4-1 lead before the Senators received a much-needed kill from Magallon to make it 4-2. A block from Portley and Jandris helped shift momentum to the Senators, who took an 8-6 lead with five of six points.

Another block, this time from Portley and Manchego, followed a big swing from Magallon that pushed D&E ahead 11-7. 
WV Wesleyan countered with the next four points out of the timeout to knot the score at 11 before zipping ahead 16-13.

Wesleyan 
maintained its advantage, stretching the lead to 22-17 and forcing a D&E timeout. The Senators had one final push out of the timeout, but the hosts held on to win the frame 25-19.

Set Four: 
Davis & Elkins 28, West Virginia Wesleyan 26

Wesleyan got off to a quick start in the third, taking a 5-2 lead. The Senators raced ahead following five consecutive markers, including kills from Portley, Luann O'Kane and Magallon, for a 12-9 advantage.

The Senators had to rally, staving off set point multiple times and using a 9-2 surge to earn the extended set win.


Set Five
: West Virginia Wesleyan 15, Davis & Elkins 9

Two kills and service ace keyed a 4-0 Wesleyan run to lift the hosts ahead 5-2. D&E responded with three of the next four points before Wesleyan scored six of the next eight to take control.

The Bobcats smacked a kill to cap the match and take the set, 15-9.
