NEWARK, Del. -- The Davis & Elkins Senators faced off with Wilmington University (Delaware) in the second round of the 2021 NCAA DII Men's Soccer Championship and advanced with a 4-2 win.
The Senators found themselves down 14 minutes into the game when they went behind after a penalty was awarded and Wilmington's Shawn Genus scored the first goal of the game.
D&E then answered back with a goal by
Daniel Cerezo. This was his 13
th goal of the season and tied the game up at 1-1. The first half ended at 1-1 with D&E trailing in shots 7-12.
The scored remained knotted at one apiece for the first several minutes of the second half until Wilmington found the back of the net in the 53
rd minute on a well-executed play that found an open Marcus Hedemann sitting on the penalty spot for an easy finish.
D&E scored again 30 seconds later and tied the game at 2-2 with a ball crossed by
O'Keefe Cunningham to
David Jara for the finish.
In the 71
st minute, D&E produced the go-ahead goal from a corner.
Gianluca Fiorini sent a cross to
Haruki Yamazaki who knocked a header past the goalkeeper to put the Senators up 3-2.
D&E then continued to dominate and would later seal the win and the ticket to the sweet 16 of the NCAA Championship with a goal in the 83
rd minute to
Daniel Cerezo scored his second goal of the day and his 14
th goal on the season in the 83
rd minute after finding himself in space and delivering a shot from a
Yavi Ortiz assist.
D&E goalkeeper
Jeremy Coste had a great day in goal for the Senators with seven saves from 18 total shots faced.
With the 4-2 win, D&E advances to the Sweet 16 round where they await the winner of the University of Charleston and American International matchup being played at 3pm on Sunday, November 21. The third and quarterfinal rounds of the Championships will be played December 2-5.
