ELKINS, W.Va. – The Davis and Elkins men's soccer team has garnered some National attention of late and for good reason. The Senators, who currently rank second in the most recent United Soccer Coaches poll were riding a 13-0-1 record into the latter part of their season with a showdown with perennial Mountain East Conference (MEC) Champion and reigning National Champion (2019), the University of Charleston next up.
The highly anticipated game certainly did not disappoint. Undefeated in their first fourteen matches this fall, the Senators had only given up goals in four matches and were 10-0-1 in the MEC. That didn't stop the UC offense from striking first. Following a great delivery from Mattia Vezzoni, Alexis Ledoux was able to sneak in at the back post to open the scoring in the 31st minute. The score would remain 1:0 at the half.
As the second half commenced the Senators began to take control, dominating majority of the possession and firing off multiple shots. The pressure was finally rewarded in the 73rd minute when two freshmen combined for the equalizer.
Kevin Zapata fed a ball into the feet of
Dominique Castano, who fired home with his left foot to tie the game. That goal was Castano's third goal of his freshmen campaign and Zapata continues his good form with the assist. He now has three goals and two assists in the last three games.
The Senators would outshoot UC 10-2 in the second half but were unable to find a winner and the game moved into Overtime deadlocked at one a piece. In a back and forth double overtime session both teams were unable to convert a game winner despite a few chances. D&E holds onto the lead in conference play and now controls their own destiny as the season enters the last few weeks.
The next match with Wheeling is set for Saturday, October 30 at 7pm on Nuttall Field on the campus of Davis and Elkins College.
