Senators Outlasted by Glenville State on Wednesday

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - Davis & Elkins was held scoreless over the final 2:52 and surrendered the game's final 14 points in a tough 90-85 defeat to Glenville State on Wednesday night in Mountain East Conference (MEC) play.

The 14-0 run was part of a larger 22-5 run over the final five minutes for Glenville State (3-0, 3-0 MEC). Davis & Elkins (1-2, 1-2 MEC) was paced by a brilliant effort from first-year guard Sam Rolle IV, who posted 29 points, four rebounds and six assists in 38 minutes.

Breland Walton notched a double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds, while Myles Monroe had 15 points, six rebounds, two assists, three steals and a block. Marcus Fleming fired in 12 points to go with five rebounds for the Senators.

GSC was led by Hegl Augustine, who notched 29 points and grabbed 16 rebounds. John Williams added 25 points, four rebounds and four assists while Nick Edwards had 13 points for the Pioneers.

D&E held a 47-44 edge at the halftime break, keeping GSC off the scoreboard for the final 1:38 of the frame. The hosts began the matchup with a 7-2 burst before the Senators settled in. Rolle IV canned a triple to slice the Glenville lead to just two at 11-9 and he tied the game about one minute later with a lay-in.

Bryton Bissainthe lifted the Senators up 18-17 at the foul line before Rolle IV ballooned the edge to 20-17 with a jumper at 12:13. The Pioneers pulled ahead 27-22 before the Senators answered with the next two buckets, including a traditional three-point play from B. Walton to tie things at 27.

The teams went back and forth before a Monroe and-one and Fleming foul shot pushed D&E ahead 47-44 at the intermission. The Senators got off to a good start in the second half, leading by as many as 13 at 61-48 before the Pioneers answered back, ultimately tying the score at 68 with an Augustine layup at 9:44

Davis & Elkins capitalized on a 12-1 run heading into the final media timeout of the evening, keyed by a pair of fastbreak layups by Rolle as the Senators led 80-70. The Pioneers attempted to chip away at the lead with a quick 5-0 run, forcing a D&E timeout leading 85-81, part of a larger 10-2 run.

Augustine's layup with 46 seconds left lifted GSC ahead for good at 86-85.

Davis & Elkins returns to action on Saturday, January 16, welcoming Concord to the McDonnell Center at 4:00 PM.
