D&E Clamps Down Concord in 67-56 Home Win on Saturday

ELKINS, W.Va. -- Davis & Elkins defeated Concord, 67-56, on Saturday afternoon at the McDonnell Center.

Gyasi Powell led D&E (2-2, 2-2 MEC) with 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting. He also had four steals and four assists. Breland Walton contributed 17 points and 13 rebounds for another double-double, and Marcus Fleming had eight points and 11 rebounds. Sam Rolle IV dished out a game-high nine assists.

Malik Johnson had 16 points for Concord (2-2, 2-2 MEC). The Mountain Lions struggled from behind the arc making just 3-of-16 attempts while also converting just 12 of 27 attempts from the foul line. D&E limited Concord to just 24 points at the half.

Tylan Hutchison also made an impact on both sides of the floor in his second consecutive appearance for D&E. The freshman collected two steals and two assists, providing some key minutes and energy on the defensive end.

Powell lifted D&E ahead 10-7 with a trey ball at 14:45 in the opening half and D&E pushed the lead to 23-18 on a layup from B. Walton. A quick 8-3 spurt, capped with a jumper from Powell, ballooned the D&E edge to 31-22 with 3:01 remaining in the opening half.

Powell moved the advantage to 10 points off a quick steal and bucket before Monroe scored the final bucket of the first half with 45 ticks left, putting D&E ahead 36-24. Two straight buckets from B. Walton moved the advantage to 16 for the Senators as the second half began.

Rolle IV extended the lead to 18 off a fastbreak hoop at 13:01 before Teemu Tumanoff slashed down the left block for a lay-in in the Senators next trip up the floor. Concord stayed in the game, ultimately working its way back to a single-digit deficit on a Johnson bucket at 5:16.

Two foul shots by Mohamed Bundu trimmed the Concord deficit to six, but Monroe, Powell and B. Walton all cashed in on opportunities at the free throw line for the final 67-56 tally.

Davis & Elkins returns to action on Wednesday, January 20, hosting Charleston at 7:30 PM.
