When you think of Amy Fincham, you think of someone of few words. However, when Amy did speak, people would listen. One of the hardest workers in every facet of being a collegiate student-athlete, Amy is a program player. There are very few athletes that come through your program that you know have not only left their mark on you as a coach, but their teammates, recruits and the institution as a whole.

  • Most Memorable Moment (Your Sport): My last collegiate hit being a triple, and at the time it meant very little to me, until I found out it was my last hit.
  • Most Memorable Moment (Outside Your Sport): Having the opportunity to team bond at the rope swing. Going to Beanders and getting Mexican for birthdays or any occasion we could come up with.
  • Who would you consider a role model from your time at D&E?: Dr. Riggleman
When I got hired as the head coach at D&E, Amy was a freshman. I told her to trust me when I told her we were going to transition her from a leftie hitter to a leftie slapper. The first year was a struggle, a lot of disappointments in opportunities, and not the results she had wanted nor expected, but she still trusted me year after year. She stayed late after practice, she came early, she asked for extra reps, she picked my brain and asked why or how all the time. From her sophomore year to her junior year, her batting average went up by .255 – and from her junior year to this year add another .100 onto that.

Amy’s work ethic, consistent dedication and buy-in to the process made her explode offensively and defensively. She is the greatest teammate you could want and one of the funnest kids to coach. You see how hard she works day in and day out and how she does all the little things right.

  • Other Hobbies: Spending time with family and friends
I’ll never forget one time we were getting hit off pretty well, and the team we were playing had a couple homers. Late in the game, Amy made a leaping catch in left field, robbing a home run. When she came into the dugout she said: 'I was not letting them hit another home run.' That's just a class example of her mentality, someone who would run through a brick wall for her teammates.

  • Future Plans Following Graduation: Continue my education at Pierpont in the PTA program
  • Message to future D&E student-athletes: Make sure to never take a single moment for granted, it goes by quick! I promise one day you will miss all of those 6am practices.
Don’t count (Amy) out of D&E softball just yet, we are looking to make a transition for her to stay as part of our program in the future. More details to come.
