Second Half Push Propels Resilient Senators Past Southern Wesleyan, 15-12

CENTRAL, S.C. – Davis & Elkins women's lacrosse recorded seven of the final eight goals to battle back and knock off Southern Wesleyan, 15-12, for the first win of the season on Saturday afternoon.

The Senators capped their Spring Break trip with a 1-2 mark against solid competition, opening the week with a pair of games in Florida before knocking off the Warriors. Southern Wesleyan moves to 2-2 with the loss.
 
Responding from a 9-5 deficit, the Senators outscored SWU 10-6 over the final 30 minutes to move in front. Angelina Horan led D&E with five goals on nine shots, adding two ground balls, a caused turnover and seven draw controls to her credit. Samantha Cozzolino added three goals and four ground balls for D&E, while Taylor Baker, Kathleen Shaw and Courtnie Couch had two goals each. In goal, Surelys Baez made eight saves before Stacey Marcelin made three stops over the final 29:48.
 
Tabitha Beecher notched five goals for the Warriors and Kaeleigh McDaniel recorded 14 saves.
 
The Senators held a 38-26 edge in shots, launching 29 shots on target.
 
Horan opened the scoring to hand D&E a 1-0 lead before Cozzolino doubled the advantage with a free position tally at 25:48. After SWU got on the board for the first time, Horan lifted the Senators ahead by two at 19:58.
 
Southern Wesleyan posted the next four goals to grab the lead back at 5-3 and eventually took a 6-5 lead into the intermission. The Warriors got off to a quick start in the second half, scoring the first three goal for a 9-5 lead.
 
D&E chipped away behind goals from Cozzolino at 26:24 and Horan at 24:54 off a free position. Amy Pfefferkorn pushed the SWU lead back to three at 10-7 with a free position marker of her own at 21:46 of the second half. A man-down goal expanded the Southern Wesleyan edge to 11-8.
 
The Senators took control, posting the next seven goals and holding a big edge in possession. Shaw fired home a man-up tally for the Senators and Marcelin gobbled up a Beecher shot off a free position attempt at 13:06 to keep the deficit to just two.
 
Barker and Horan found the back of the net just over one minute apart as D&E rallied to tie the score at 11. Couch provided D&E with the go-ahead goal at 10:25 before Barker posted an insurance marker off a free position at 9:47.
 
Couch worked her way open on the right wing, finishing a pass from Barker to continue the surge before Emily Smith cashed in on a man-up chance for a 15-11 lead.
 
Davis & Elkins returns to West Virginia for its first home game of the season on Tuesday, March 4 at 4:00 PM against Edinboro from Nuttall Field.
