Women’s Lacrosse Drops Season Opener to Lynn in Florida

THE RUNDOWN
  • Final Score: Lynn 16, Davis & Elkins 4
  • Records: Lynn (1-2) | Davis & Elkins (0-1)
  • Location: Bobby Campbell Stadium – Boca Raton, Fla.

KEY SEQUENCE
  • Lynn recorded the first three goals of the game before expanding its lead to 7-1 with just over 13 minutes remaining in the opening half. That lead held up for the Knights, despite a solid offensive performance from sophomore Ryann Sumner and junior Taylor Baker.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After controlling the opening draw, Lynn struck quickly for a 1-0 lead. Emily Smith had a chance denied off the ensuing draw control before Lynn doubled its lead at 26:05 of the first half. Angelina Horan looked to get the Senators on the board at 21:18 with a shot attempt as D&E mounted pressure before its first tally of the matchup, coming from Baker to bring the deficit to 3-1 at 20:34.
  • The Senators continued charging offensively as Sumner fired two shots that were stopped and Horan launched one wide. Lynn posted the next four goals for a 7-1 edge after the D&E onslaught.
  • Sumner notched two of the last four goals to end the half, taking feeds from Hanna Bond and Barker at 9:05 and :28, respectively. Lynn countered in the second half with four shot attempts before three straight goals for a 12-3 lead.
  • Barker fired home the final goal of the night for the Senators at 2:53 before the Knights dropped in one final marker with one second remaining for a 16-4 final margin.

GAME NOTES
  • Lynn held a 2-21 edge in shots, placing 23 on goal. Surleys Baez recorded five saves in goal for the Senators in nearly 38 minutes.
  • Things got chippy between both teams around the 13-minute mark of the second half, resulting in five cards and a pair of fighting penalties between the two sides.
  • Sumner was second on the team last season with 63 goals and seems to have picked up where she left off last year as one of the Senators' most potent offensive threats.
  • Baker led the team with two goals and an assist, while also adding a pair of caused turnovers.
  • Mackenzie Smegal was active defensively for the Senators with four ground balls, four caused turnovers and two draw controls in the season opener.
  • The Senators have yet to win a season opener since the inception of the program in 2016.
