ELKINS, W. Va — Urbana erased a 16 point Senator lead down the stretch to stun Davis & Elkins with Shaunn Monroe's buzzer-beater, 62-61 on Wednesday night.
Taking advantage of Urbana's slow start to go on a 9-0 run to start the game, D&E held a double-digit lead early in the first half. Urbana shot just 1-13 from the field through the first eight minutes of the game as the Senators held a 14-2 lead. D&E would score nine points off three-pointers to lead 23-6 with 9:13 remaining. Urbana found a way to break their early funk, using a strong inside presence to propel a 13-0 run.
Patrick Wilburn's steal and fastbreak created a three-point play for the Senators, who led 32-19 with 2:30 to go in the half.
Both teams struggled to break a slow start in the second half, as the Blue Knights kept the game within ten for most of the half. D&E extended their lead to 54-38 after a
Donte Doleman intercepted pass and an agile drive from
Mandela Baledrokadroka resulted in four points. Urbana would go on an 11-0 run to close the deficit to five, charging back from the brink to put the game down to the wire. Two quick exchanges resulted in some aggressive play late from both teams, and a Blue Knight three-pointer made it a one point game with a minute to go. Urbana struggled all night from beyond the arc, but clutch shooting late caused a thrilling finish. Shaunn Monroe took a Tehree Horn pass to sink the game-winning shot as time expired.
Doleman finished with 15 points, while
Erkam Kiris added 13 points.
Patrick Wilburn finished with seven points and a game-high 11 rebounds, and
Myles Monroe added eight points and three steals.
