WASHINGTON D.C. —
A late charge led by senior
Matthew Dyck came up just short despite holding U.D.C. scoreless through the final 11 minutes of the game, as the Firebirds held on in the final seconds to defeat Davis & Elkins 19-18 on Wednesday afternoon. Dyck scored four goals in the final quarter of the game, as the Senators outscored the Firebirds 6-1 in the 4th quarter. However, UDC's four goals in the final two minutes of the third quarter proved to create enough of a lead despite D&E's valiant late-game efforts.
Trevor Kennedy tied the game at two with 11:43 left in the first quarter, after the two teams exchanged three goals in four seconds. UDC would go on a 5-0 run as the Senators were held scoreless until 10:13 remaining in the second quarter, when
Nolan Morrison would notch his first of two consecutive goals. Three straight Firebird goals extended the lead to 10-4, but Kennedy,
Aidan O'Dwyer, and
Tyler Kolodka would score before the end of the first half, as UDC took an 11-7 lead into halftime.
Kennedy would score twice more in the first six minutes of the third quarter, and
Kyle Durec added two goals of his own to put the game within three, but four goals in a span of 71 seconds towards the end of the third quarter would ultimately doom D&E, despite Dyck's four goals in the final quarter. Morrison would score twice more in the fourth quarter, but three late shot attempts missed in the final minute to seal the victory for the Firebirds.
Kennedy, Dyck, and Morrison led the Senators with four goals each, while Durec added three goals. Morrison and Kolodka had two assists apiece, and Durec led the way with five ground balls while going 10-for-25 on face-offs.
David Thorne Jr. spent the entire game in goal, recording 13 saves on 32 shot attempts.
