West Liberty won two matches at #5 and #6 singles to narrowly edge Davis & Elkins this afternoon at the Thomas Tennis Center by a score of 4-3.
The Senators came out hot in doubles play, with the #1 doubles team of
Andrew Shand and
Alvaro Legoinha winning 6-2 for their second straight win at the top spot.
West Liberty, currently ranked #9 in the Atlantic Region by the ITA, held off
Cody Turner and
Mason Schoonover at #3 doubles 6-2, but the #2 doubles team of
Alejandro Meseguer and
Obert Matthew Mulyadi took control of their match to win 6-2 and give the Senators the doubles point for the first time this Spring.
The Hilltoppers quickly knotted the match with a straight set win at #3 singles, but
Alejandro Meseguer was dominant at the second spot, winning 6-2, 6-1 to give D&E a 2-1 lead.
Alvaro Legoinha fought hard in the second set of his match, but came up just short at #4 singles, 6-2, 6-4 to tie the match at two.
Obert Matthew Mulyadi dropped the first set against the Atlantic Region's #16 ranked player Camilo Moncayo at #1 singles 6-2, but blanked his opponent 6-0 in the second set to force a deciding third set.
Mulyadi and his opponent exchanged holds of serve, but he was able to get the break at 3-2 and hold off his opponent for a big 2-6, 6-0, 6-3 win to put the Senators one match away.
Jacob Bowman was competitive all the way through his match at #5 singles, but couldn't complete the comeback in a 6-3, 6-3 loss.
At #6 singles, the Hilltoppers were able to control the match and win 6-2, 6-3 to win the match 4-3.
The Senators will travel to Kentucky Wesleyan on Saturday for a match with the Panthers in GMAC play. Start time in Owensboro is 5:00 PM EST, 4:00 PM Central Time.
