ELKINS -
The Senators Softball team rode their bats and strong pitching to a midweek sweep of visiting Salem at Elkins Middle School on Wednesday. A delay in scheduling led to the games being moved under the lights.
Haley Grindstaff was strong in Game 1 on the mound, continuing her solid pitching with another complete game victory. Grindstaff allowed five hits and one run in six innings.
Alyssa Cairns went 3-4 with two RBIs and a double, and
Jade Allee was 2-3, also with two RBIs and a double.
Kelsie Millner's two RBI single in the sixth inning was the necessary insurance for a 6-1 win for the Senators.
In Game 2, Salem jumped out to a 3-0 lead off starting pitcher
Katelyn Cobb.
Ava Willis quelled the Tigers' bats in two shutout innings of relief to allow the Senator bats to rally.
Katie Manson started the rally with a base hit, and scored on
Kelsie Millner's RBI double.
Jordan Crawford brought the game within one, going home on
Alyssa Cairns' sacrifice fly.
Brittany Wade scored
Kelsie Millner on an error by the Tigers to tie the game at 3, and
Jade Allee brought home
Ryn Boelter and
Rhetta Persinger on another Tigers error to give D&E a 5-3 lead, a score that would hold final through the seventh inning.
The Senators will return to the field on Monday at Elkins Middle School for a doubleheader against WVU-Tech.
