Ava Willis combined to throw a no-hitter against visiting WVU-Tech on Monday night at Elkins Middle School.
Haley Grindstaff tossed the first four innings, striking out four Golden Bear batters.
Ava Willis appeared in relief and tossed two perfect innings in the 8-0 victory.
This is the first no-hitter thrown by Senator softball pitching since
Allie Lapallo's performance against WVU-Tech on March 29, 2016.
Alyssa Cairns started the game off with a two-run home run in the first inning, scoring
Jordan Crawford for Cairns' sixth home run of the season.
Rhetta Persinger added two more to the lead, plating Cairns and
Kelsie Millner with her third inning single for a 4-0 lead.
Ryn Boelter hit a three-run home run later in the inning to score
Haley Grindstaff and
Brittany Wade and give D&E a 7-0 advantage on Boelter's second bomb of the season.
The Senators plated one more run in the sixth when
Jordan Crawford scored
Kailynn Parks on a sacrifice fly for the 8-0 lead, which would hold final.
In Game 2,
Rhetta Persinger and
Ryn Boelter's back-to-back home runs gave D&E a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning.
Kelsie Millner added two more to the lead with a triple, and
Katelyn Cobb helped herself out with an RBI single.
Katelyn Cobb would get the win on the mound in relief of starter
Jade Allee.
Ava Willis was solid in relief, allowing just one hit in two innings.
The Golden Bears brought the game to a one-run deficit in the sixth inning, but the Senators plated four in the bottom of the sixth to cement the victory.
Alyssa Cairns hit a two-run single to score
Jordan Crawford and
Kailynn Parks. Crawford stole two bases in Game 2, bringing her total on the season to a team-leading 17.
Cairns would score on a wild pitch, but not before a
Brittany Wade fielder's choice would plate
Kelsie Millner.
The Senators have a quick turn around, hosting rival Alderson Broaddus in Tuesday's doubleheader at Joni Smith Softball Field. Game times are set for 3 and 5 PM.
