Grindstaff and Willis Toss Combined No-Hitter in Win over WVU-Tech

ELKINS -

Haley Grindstaff and Ava Willis combined to throw a no-hitter against visiting WVU-Tech on Monday night at Elkins Middle School.

Haley Grindstaff tossed the first four innings, striking out four Golden Bear batters. Ava Willis appeared in relief and tossed two perfect innings in the 8-0 victory.

This is the first no-hitter thrown by Senator softball pitching since Allie Lapallo's performance against WVU-Tech on March 29, 2016.

Alyssa Cairns started the game off with a two-run home run in the first inning, scoring Jordan Crawford for Cairns' sixth home run of the season.

Rhetta Persinger added two more to the lead, plating Cairns and Kelsie Millner with her third inning single for a 4-0 lead.

Ryn Boelter hit a three-run home run later in the inning to score Haley Grindstaff and Brittany Wade and give D&E a 7-0 advantage on Boelter's second bomb of the season.

The Senators plated one more run in the sixth when Jordan Crawford scored Kailynn Parks on a sacrifice fly for the 8-0 lead, which would hold final.

In Game 2, Rhetta Persinger and Ryn Boelter's back-to-back home runs gave D&E a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning.

Kelsie Millner added two more to the lead with a triple, and Katelyn Cobb helped herself out with an RBI single.

Katelyn Cobb would get the win on the mound in relief of starter Jade Allee. Ava Willis was solid in relief, allowing just one hit in two innings.

The Golden Bears brought the game to a one-run deficit in the sixth inning, but the Senators plated four in the bottom of the sixth to cement the victory.

Alyssa Cairns hit a two-run single to score Jordan Crawford and Kailynn Parks. Crawford stole two bases in Game 2, bringing her total on the season to a team-leading 17.

Cairns would score on a wild pitch, but not before a Brittany Wade fielder's choice would plate Kelsie Millner.

The Senators have a quick turn around, hosting rival Alderson Broaddus in Tuesday's doubleheader at Joni Smith Softball Field. Game times are set for 3 and 5 PM.
