Softball Splits with Walsh and Malone

CANTON, Ohio -

The Davis & Elkins College Senators Softball teams played to splits with the hosting Walsh Cavaliers and Malone Pioneers this weekend in Canton, Ohio.

Against Walsh in Game 1, the Senators fell behind early 6-0, but scraped together two runs in the sixth inning for a 6-2 final score.

Brittany Wade drove in Kelsie Millner with an RBI single to start the scoring. Millner went 2-4 on the day with a double.

Rhetta Persinger then plated Alyssa Cairns for the second run of the day. Jordan Crawford also had two hits in Game 1.

In Game 2, Haley Grindstaff tossed a five hit shutout and got help from a two-run home run by Brittany Wade in a 4-0 victory.

Grindstaff was dominant on the hill, walking just one batter and striking out five in her strongest start of the season.

Alyssa Cairns drove in Jordan Crawford twice in the early innings for a 2-0 lead. Both Cairns and Crawford finished 2-3 on the day.

Brittany Wade followed with a two-run home run to score Cairns and give the Senators a 4-0 lead, which remained the score through Haley Grindstaff's shutout victory.

Against Malone on Saturday, the Senators couldn't get anything going in Game 1, falling 8-0.

However, D&E roared back with an exciting extra innings victory, scoring two runs in the eighth inning for a 4-2 victory.

Alyssa Cairns had a massive day, with three doubles and two RBIs, tying a school record with her three two-baggers.

Amy Fincham started out the scoring with an RBI triple in the second inning, and Alyssa Cairns hit her first RBI double of the day giving the Senators a 2-0 lead.

Cairns hit her third double and second run-scorer in extra innings, plating Jordan Crawford to give D&E a 3-2 lead in the eighth inning. Cairns would score on Rhetta Persinger's base knock.

Haley Grindstaff went the distance again, allowing just two runs in eight strong innings on the hill.

The Senators will return to action with a home doubleheader tomorrow against Hillsdale. Start time is set for 12 PM, with Game 2 to follow.
