CEDARVILLE, Ohio -
The Davis & Elkins College Senators Men's Tennis team got off to a rough start in their opening weekend of Great Midwest Athletic Conference play, falling to defending conference-champion Hillsdale, and the Yellow Jackets of Cedarville University on the road.
Against Hillsdale, who was just ranked #45 in the ITA Division II poll, the Senators fell in two tight doubles matches to fall behind 1-0.
At #1 doubles,
Obert Matthew Mulyadi and
Alejandro Meseguer played well against the regionally ranked team of Justin Hyman and Charlie Adams. The Senators forced a tiebreaker, but came up just short, losing 7-6 (7-4).
At #2 doubles,
Andrew Shand and
Alvaro Legoinha fell in a tight match 6-4.
Mulyadi, playing #1 singles, played the closest singles match, falling to Charlie Adams in a grueling, exciting match highlighted with excellent levels of play from both players, 6-4, 7-5.
The match was played to decision, with the Hillsdale Chargers winning 5-0.
Against Cedarville, a tight match at #1 doubles yet again decided the doubles point.
Andrew Shand and
Alvaro Legoinha were dominant in a 6-2 win at #2 doubles.
At #1 doubles,
Obert Matthew Mulyadi and
Alejandro Meseguer fell in a tight 6-4 decision to Alex Totten and Matt Brumbaugh of the Yellow Jackets. Cedarville won 6-1 at #3 doubles to take a 1-0 lead into singles play.
In singles play, Cedarville was able to win close matches to take the match by a score of 6-1.
At #1 singles, Mulyadi fell in three tight sets to Alex Totten, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3.
Cordel Bostic played a competitive match at #5 singles, falling 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).
Alvaro Legoinha picked up the only singles win for the Senators, holding off Cole Moss at #4 singles in a 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 10-5 win.
The Senators will resume action next Saturday on the road against Ashland University. First serve is set for 1 PM.
