Strong Defense, Effort on Glass Pushes D&E to Road Win at Urbana

URBANA, Ohio - Junior forward Jamiyah Johnson tied a career high 31 points and collected a double-double before halftime as the Senators played strong defensively down the stretch in a 75-70 road victory at Urbana on Saturday afternoon from the Grimes Center.

Johnson posted her 31 points on 13-of-18 shooting from the floor and added a career high 26 rebounds (12 offensive) to push D&E to its second conference win of the season. Johnson's 26 rebounds tied a school record set by Vickie Warehime against CW Post back in January of 1985. Additionally, Johnson's 26 rebounds are the most by a player at the Division II level this season. 

The Senators outrebounded Urbana, 52-34, while three other players scored in double figures for D&E.

Peyton Mohler pitched in a career-high 16 points along with three rebounds and four assists, while Jay Kilpatrick and Jessica Eadsforth-Yates had 11 points apiece. The Senators trailed by four at the break, but chipped away in the third quarter before overtaking the Blue Knights in the final frame.

Urbana made just one of its final nine field goal attempts and was outscored 21-12 in the fourth quarter. Sylvia Hudson had a team-high 29 points and eight boards for the Blue Knights, while Bailey Draughn notched 16 points in 35 minutes.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Urbana got of to a quick start on its home floor, taking an early 10-4 lead in the opening quarter. Bailey Draughn canned a three to increase the Blue Knights' lead to 15-6. Johnson dropped in a layup for her ninth point of the quarter, making the score 21-14 in favor of Urbana through one.
  • Davis & Elkins opened the second period with a 6-2 run, keyed by four foul shots from Mohler and a driving layup from Jay Kilpatrick to make it 23-20. Chloe Smith responded for Urbana, capping a run that quickly made it 30-22 with 4:16 left in the opening half. Sydney Nestor ended the half with two made foul shots, sending the Senators to the locker room down by four at 37-33.
  • Johnson worked inside on the right block before kicking a pass out to Kilpatrick for an open three give the Senators their first lead at 38-37 with 8:10 left in the third. Urbana quickly regained the advantage, but Davis & Elkins got back to within three on a shot from Jessica Eadsforth-Yates at 4:36 in the third. Johnson layed in a shot from Mohler following the third quarter media timeout and a three from Eadsforth-Yates made it 53-51 with 2:47 left in the third quarter
  • A layup from Draughn pushed the UU lead to five, but a foul shot from Kilpatrick made it a four-point game at the end of the third quarter. Mahler converted the layup and-one, which sliced the deficit to one at 60-59 in the fourth quarter. Nestor found herself open on the left block off an Urbana turnover and converted the fastbreak layup from Eadsforth-Yates to bring D&E back to within one at 62-61.
  • Kilpatrick drove the baseline to answer an Urbana hoop with 3:22 remaining in regulation. After missing two foul shots a few minutes earlier, Johnson locked in an made two foul shots with 2:50 left as D&E trailed 68-67. The Senators held Urbana scoreless for around 2:30 of game time before Mohler pushed the Senators in front, 69-68, at the foul line.
  • Following an Urbana timeout, the Senators defense stood tall and Kilpatrick cashed in with two foul shots on the next trip down the floor. Easforth-Yates made one of two at the line for a 72-70 lead with just about 30 seconds left, prompting an Urbana timeout. Kilpatrick forced another turnover during the ensuing Blue Knights possession and hit one of two at the line for a 73-70 lead.

GAME NOTES
  • Johnson left little doubt as to when she would secure her seventh double-double of the season, collecting the feat well before halftime in the second quarter.
  • Johnson entered the game third in the nation with six double-doubles.
  • Kilpatrick went into double figures for the first time since November 18 in her 50th career start.
  • The Senators held a 19-6 edge in second chance points.
  • D&E went 9-of-10 from the foul line in the opening 20 minutes to stay within striking distance at the intermission. The trend of strong foul shooting continues into the second half as D&E went 22-29 for the game, making 10 more foul shots than the Blue Knights.
  • Mohler played all 40 minutes for D&E and went 8-8 from the foul line.
