Men’s Basketball Kept at Bay in Loss to Urbana

URBANA, Ohio - Davis & Elkins struggled out of the gate and could not put together a big enough second half surge in an 83-76 loss to Urbana on Saturday in Mountain East Conference (MEC) play at the Grimes Center.

Donte Doleman was one of four Senators in double figures with a game-high 23 points. Kyle Leslie followed with 13 points as the freshman went 3-of-4 from behind the arc, while Elliot White posted a career-high 11 points. Myles Monroe scored 11 and added a team-best nine rebounds and two steals. Mandela Baledrokadroka handed out five assists.

Urbana moves to 2-1 at home this season following a 21-point outburst from Joran Bradley. Mario Lacy went for 18 points and Shaunn Monroe added 14 points in 32 minutes.

THE RUNDOWN
  • Urbana (3-7, 2-4 MEC) - 83
  • Davis & Elkins (4-7, 2-4 MEC) - 76
  • Warren G. Grimes Center - Urbana, Ohio

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Urbana opened up a 14-7 lead after a Michael Ryan layup at 12:25 in the first half. The Blue Knights lead hovered around seven for much of the half as the Senators started to find their touch as the half wore on.
  • Kyle Leslie converted a three and then Patrick Wilburn finished the putback attempt a few minutes later as the Senators trailed by eight, 30-22. Elliot White answered an Urbana three with one of his own, and that shot ended up being the final bucket of the opening half with the Blue Knights leading 33-25.
  • Leslie drilled a trey out of the locker room int he second half, but Urbana responded with a quick 7-0 burst to pull the score to 40-28. The 7-0 run was part of a larger 12-2 outburst for the Blue Knights, which expanded the margin to 15 at 45-30 in the second half.
  • Doleman dropped in a layup to trim the deficit to 45-34 and buried a three to make the score 51-42. After the media timeout, Leslie worked inside for a layup as D&E continued to try and get back into the game, trailing by seven.
  • After a Tehree Horn three, Leslie had a three in response the next trip up the floor at the 7:46 mark. Monroe made a three at 6:06, but again Urbana had an answer on the other end, converting a trey from Horn 15 seconds later for a 72-61 lead.
  • Doleman converted a four-point play to make it 74-71, but Urbana controlled the clock and made a key layup for a 78-73 advantage. Doleman notched another and-one layup with less than 30 seconds left, but the Blue Knights salted the rest of the game away at the foul line.

GAME NOTES
  • Davis & Elkins did an admirable job to keep the first half score as close as it was considering the team stats through 20 minutes. Urbana went 12-of-24 from the field (50%) while D&E was just 9-of 31 (29%).
  • A 9-2 run for Davis & Elkins over a four-minute span around the final media timeout of the afternoon brought the deficit to single digits.
  • Doleman recorded his fourth game of at least 20 points this season in the loss.
  • White posted a career-high scoring output, his first double-digit game as a Senator.
  • Monroe was in double figures with 11, but made his presence felt in other areas. He pulled down nine rebounds, the second most this season, and added four assists and two steals.
