Sharpshooting Senators Pick Up Another Home Win

ELKINS, W. Va. – Davis & Elkins shot over 50% in each half, had five players in double figures, and forced 16 turnovers in a resounding 89-75 victory over Clarion on Saturday afternoon inside the McDonnell Center.

Davis & Elkins (2-2) was once again stellar behind the arc, converting on 12 three-pointers, including seven in the opening half. Donte Doleman paced the balanced offensive output with 16 points, two rebounds, four assists and two steals in 30 minutes. Erkam Kiris and Terrance Lakes added 13 points each, while Myles Monroe added 12. Kyle Leslie converted a pair of three's and ended the day with 10 points, recording the second double digit scoring game of his career.

Clarion (0-4) was powered by freshman standout Aaron Hilzendeger, who notched a game-high 21 points, all coming behind the arc. Elijah Cottrill added 17 points for the Golden Eagles and Stevan Rodriguez chipped in 14 points in 22 minutes of the bench.

The Senators capitalized off Clarion miscues, converting 23 points off turnovers and receiving 39 points from their bench.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Davis & Elkins raced to a seven-point lead with foul shots from Kiris, a three from Teemu Tumanoff, followed by another bucket from Tumanoff. Clarion responded back to tie the game at 13, but Tumanoff again provided a timely three at the 13:50 mark to grab the lead right back.
  • Emre Yildirim built the Senators a five-point cushion with a trey ball from the left corner, making it 31-26. Monroe converted on a pair of foul shots to expand the D&E edge to six at 44-38, but Kaison Branch stuck a jump shot with under 10 seconds left in the half to trim the Clarion deficit to 44-40.
  • Doleman stepped into a three off a kickout pass from Lakes at 15:11 in the second half, which lifted the Senators in front by double digits at 55-43. Leslie had a great stretch as he grabbed a defensive rebound, made a jumper, then pick-pocketed Cottrill before finding Lakes streaking ahead for a fastbreak layup at 12:42. Leslie fired in a three to push the lead to 29 as D&E rolled in the second half.
  • Elliot White converted from beyond the arc in front of the Senators bench at 2:51 as D&E maintained a comfortable lead the rest of the way.
