Women’s Soccer Finishes 2019 Season with Senior Day

ELKINS, W. Va. – Davis & Elkins surrendered the lone goal of the afternoon in the 65th minute in a 1-0 defeat to West Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon in Mountain East Conference (MEC) play at a crisp Nuttall Field.

Davis & Elkins (7-8-2, 6-7-1 MEC) finishes its first season in the MEC with seven victories, just missing out on a berth in the conference tournament. Meanwhile, West Virginia Wesleyan (11-7, 8-5 MEC) heads into the postseason on a six-match winning streak to cap the regular season.

Haelly Ramirez converted the game-winning for West Virginian Wesleyan in the 65th minute, burying a rebound chance off a shot that caromed off the post. The goal handed Ramirez her 10th of the season. It was part of a strong effort offensively for the Bobcats, who held a 15-5 overall edge in shots.

Davis & Elkins put three shots on frame as Nariana Nealy and Maria Cabal had shots stopped in the opening frame. Katie Clarke made four stops in net for D&E as the Senators increased their win total by one from last season under the tutelage of first year head coach Declan McGill.

THE RUNDOWN

  • Davis & Elkins (7-8-2, 6-7-1 MEC) – 0
  • Nuttall Field – Elkins, W. Va.

MATCH NOTES
  • These teams have been evenly matched over the years, and today's 1-0 score is just another example. Davis & Elkins is 2-2-2 in the all-time series against WV Wesleyan, dating back to the 2010 season.
  • The Senators found themselves on the wrong side of a 1-0 score after defeating the bobcats by the same margin on the road back in early October.
  • While the Senators will lose some key seniors, including Roxine Chambers, Angelina Horan, Chelsi Jadoo, Asheli Freed and Samantha Cozzolino, there are several freshmen that made an immediate mark in their first season with the Senators.
  • Freed finished her collegiate career with 12 goals and 12 assists.

UP NEXT
  • The Senators return for the 2020 season next fall.
