URBANA, Ohio – Davis & Elkins held leads of eight and five in the second and third set, but could not close things out as Urbana handed the Senators a 3-0 sweep in Mountain East Conference (MEC) play on Friday night at the Grimes Center.

Kaitlyn LaCour had a match-high 13 kills for Davis & Elkins (11-7, 5-3 MEC) while junior setter Sarah Warren handed out 23 assists and a service ace. The Senators finished with just six blocks as a team after tallying 10 or more in two of the last three matches.

Urbana (11-9, 7-1 MEC) was able to string together rallies in the second and third sets to earn the sweep and opened the match with a big run for a 25-12 set win. Lexi Reinhert, Hayley Delor and Maggie Burns had 12 kills each in a balanced effort for the Blue Knights.

Brianna Portley made her first start for the Senators and produced four kills and a pair of block assists. Raleighanne Weaver and Jessa Henry chipped in three kills each for the Senators, who were limited to a .078 hitting percentage.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Set One: Davis & Elkins found itself in an early hole as Urbana jumped ahead 20-9 with a 12-1 run.
Set Two: D&E responded in the second set with a kill from LaCour for a 5-2 lead. Another 6-0 run, keyed by consecutive service aces by Essence West made it 11-5 before the Blue Knights battled back for a late lead.
Set Three: LaCour rocketed a kill for a 7-3 edge but another Urbana run brought the Blue Knights to within one. A Sarah Warren service ace made it 14-9 and LaCour extended the Senators lead to 20-15 with a kill. UU used a 10-3 surge to close the match and capture the sweep.

MATCH NOTES

LaCour picked up her fourth straight double-double for the Senators.
D&E suffered its second straight sweep against the top teams in the MEC standings.
Urbana had three players with 12 kills, hitting .226 for the match.
D&E posted 3.0 total blocks, its lowest output of the season.
