PEPPER PIKE, Ohio – The Davis & Elkins College Women's Lacrosse team battled to a tough defeat against Ursuline College Friday afternoon, falling 21-12 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference contest.
The Senators fell behind early, as the hosts jumped out to an 8-1 lead. Ursuline scored the opening goal and
Gabby Fagan answered 51 seconds later with her first of four goals in the game.
After Ursuline scored seven straight, the Senators made a quality charge back into the game, starting with
Kathleen Shaw's first of four goals in the contest.
Following another Ursuline goal, the Senators scored four straight, starting with two from Fagan and then a goal from Shaw.
Savannah Stanford scored to cut the deficit to 9-6 before Ursuline capitalized on a woman-advantage situation to go back up by four.
Stanford then scored her second goal followed by a goal from
Samantha Cozzolino to bring D&E to within two goals in a 10-8 game.
Ursuline would score three more goals before the end of the half to take a 13-8 lead into the break.
Cozzolino started the second half with a goal and Shaw scored her third after the Arrows answered back with a goal.
The hosts would then score five-straight goals to pull away from the Senators. In the final eight minutes, Fagan and Shaw would score a goal each to cap off their four-goal games.
The Senators lost the draw control battle 22-11 in the game. Davis & Elkins forced 15 turnovers from Ursuline and only turned the ball over 11 times, winning the turnover battle for the first time this year.
Surelys Baez made seven save in the game, allowing 13 goals in the first half.
Ebele De La Bay Coffie played the second half in goal, allowing eight goals while making four saves.
Casey Johnson led the Senators in the game with four.
Cozzolino had a team-high three caused turnovers, with Fagan forcing two. Cozzolino also led the Senators with five ground balls.
Savannah Gregg finished with four ground balls, while Fagan and Johnson had three ground balls each.
The Senators will return to action on Sunday as they remain in Ohio to face Lake Erie in another Great Midwest Athletic Conference contest. The opening draw is set for 12 p.m. in Painesville.
