CANTON, Ohio – The Davis & Elkins College Softball team opened up its Great Midwest Athletic Conference schedule on Thursday with a loss and a tie against Ursuline College in a doubleheader hosted at Malone University's Pioneer Field.
The Senators fell 5-3 to the Arrows in game one and game two ended in an 8-8 tie after the contest was suspended due to darkness following the fifth inning.
In game one, the Senators took an early lead, as
Alyssa Cairns doubled to left center, scoring
Kelsie Millner.
Brittany Wade then singled to left center, scoring Cairns.
Ursuline responded with a run in the first and then another run in the second to tie the game at 2.
Davis & Elkins took the lead in the third off the bat of Wade again, as she doubled to right center, scoring Cairns for the second time in the game.
The Senators would hold the lead into the fifth inning when Ursuline plated three runs, the first two coming off a homerun to take the lead. The Arrows would add one more insurance run latter in the inning.
Allie Lapallo picked up the loss, tossing six innings and giving up all five runs. Lapallo allowed seven hits and three walks, while striking out three.
Wade finished the game with a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate. Cairns and Lapallo also had two hits each to combine for eight of the Senators 10 hits.
Davis & Elkins also stranded nine baserunners in the game.
In game two, the Senators again took an early lead. Wade continued her strong day with her fifth consecutive hit on a single to center field that scored
Jordan Crawford and Millner.
Later in the inning,
Morgan Tandarich singled to score Wade and cap the inning for the Senators.
Ursuline answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning on a two-run homerun.
Sydney Turner hit a homerun to center field in the second inning, extending the Senators lead to 4-2. However, Ursuline responded with three runs in the bottom half of the second inning, taking a 5-4 lead.
The Senators trailed for just a short amount of time, as the Senators capitalized with two runs on an error from the Arrows' pitcher. Later in the inning, Crawford hit a two-run homerun with Turner on to give D&E an 8-5 lead.
The Senators held Ursuline scoreless in the third and fourth, but the home team battled back in the fifth inning to score a pair of runs on a homerun and added another to tie the game at 8.
With darkness settling in, the game would be called in the sixth inning, with five full innings completed.
Victoria Krystynak tossed the first five outs for the Senators, allowing five runs on five hits while striking out three.
Jade Allee tossed the final 10 outs, allowing three runs, two earned, on three hits and three walks with two strikeouts.
Millner, Tandarich and
Katie Manson each finished with two hits in the game.
Wade finished the day without being retired, going 5-for-5 at the plate with a walk and a hit by pitch.
The Senators will be back in action on Friday, taking on Ohio Dominican in a doubleheader in Columbus. The games, originally scheduled to be held in Elkins, were moved due to weather forecasted for the Elkins area. D&E will be the home teams in the games set to start at 2 an 4 p.m.
