Softball Sweeps Ohio Valley In G-MAC Play

ELKINS, W.Va. – The Davis & Elkins College Softball team picked up an important doubleheader sweep over Ohio Valley, winning 2-1 and 6-4 in Great Midwest Athletic Conference play and on senior day.
 
The day could not have started any better for the Senators and senior Allie Lapallo, who threw a one-hitter and gave up a single unearned run to help D&E to a game one victory.
 
Alyssa Cairns would double down the left field line to score Kelsie Millner and Jordan Crawford in the third inning, giving the Senators a 2-0 lead.
 
OVU would answer back with the unearned run in the fourth inning, but Lapallo would keep the Fighting Scots scoreless the rest of the way.
 
Lapallo finished with four strikeouts in the complete-game victory.
 
Offensively, Crawfird went 3-for-3 with a run to lead the way for the Senators, while Cairns was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
 
In game two, Ohio Valley jumped out to a 4-0 lead, capitalizing on an error to score four runs, with only two earned.
 
Davis & Elkins would respond with four runs of its own in the bottom of the second.
 
Alexis Smith started the scoring for the Senators with a single to left center that scored Crawford. Jade Allee then tripled to score Smith and later scored on a Katie Manson bunt single.
 
Cairns capped the scoring in the inning with a triple to left center to score Manson.
 
D&E would take the lead in the fifth with a single from Smith to score Rylie Anderson. Smith would bring home another run in the fifth with a double to right center that scored Rhetta Persinger and capped the scoring.
 
Sara Tobin picked up the win in relief, tossing 4.2 innings of scoreless softball, allowing no runs on four hits.
 
Katelyn Cobb picked up the save, tossing a scoreless two innings.
 
Offensively, Smith went 3-for-3 with a run to lead the way for the Senators, while Cairns was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
 
The Senators return to action on Saturday, taking on Lake Erie for a doubleheader to close out the regular season. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Joni Smith Field.
