Softball Splits Doubleheader with Kentucky Wesleyan

ELKINS, W.Va. - The Davis and Elkins College Softball team split with Kentucky Wesleyan College today at Joni Smith Field in Great Midwest Athletic Conference play, winning 2-1 before falling 3-1.

In the first game, the visitors threatened to score but left two runners on base in each of the first two innings. However, the Panthers did break the tie, scoring their only run in the third inning.

The Senators got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning, scoring their first of two runs. After Allie Lapallo doubled to lead off the inning, she was pinch ran for by Kaitlyn Giffin, who then scored on a sacrifice fly by Jordan Crawford.

In the sixth inning, the Senators took the lead after Kelsie Millner doubled to left and scored two batters later on Brittany Wade's sacrifice fly.

In the 7th inning, D&E held the Panthers scoreless to secure the victory.

Lapallo picked up the win, tossing all seven innings while giving up just six hits. She finished with two strikeouts.

In the second game, the visitors put one run on the scoreboard in the first inning. They loaded the bases after that, but the Senators held on to strand three Kentucky Wesleyan baserunners.

The Panthers loaded the bases once again in the second inning, this time scoring two runs to take a 3-0 lead.

The Senators would get the offense rolling in the third, as Amy Fincham doubled to start off the inning. After a bunt single by Katie Manson, Fincham scored on a ball in play by Alyssa Cairns.

It was D&E's turn to load the bases after scoring the run, but the Senators too stranded the bases loaded.

Both teams would go without scoring throughout the remainder of the game.

Sara Tobin tossed 5.2 innings in relief, scattering five hits and a walk while striking out two.

Victoria Krystynak picked up the loss, giving up three runs in 1.1 innings.

The Davis and Elkins College Softball team returns to action Saturday afternoon to play a doubleheader against Trevecca Nazarene at Joni Smith Field. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. in the pivotal G-MAC battle.
