ELKINSÂ - The Davis and Elkins Women's Lacrosse team picked up its first win of the season by beating Ohio Valley University 12-10 in a pivotal Great Midwest Athletic Conference game tonight at Nuttall Field.
Â
Gabby Fagan led the way scoring five goals, while
Samantha Cozzolino scored four and
Kathleen Shaw picked up a hat trick to lead the way for the Senators in the victory.
Â
The Senators started strong with a couple of goals within the first ten minutes of the game. The sophomore Shaw opened up the scoring, assisted by Cozzolino, just over six minutes into the game.
Â
After giving the assist, Cozzolino picked up her first goal as she scored on an unassisted effort just a few seconds later.
Â
Gabby Fagan increased D&E's advantage, scoring the third goal of the night 10:28 into the game.
Â
After calling a timeout, OVU scored four goals straight in less than five minutes to take the lead, forcing D&E to call a timeout as well.
Â
Out of that timeout, the Senators Cozzolino scored her second goal to tie the game.
Â
D&E conceded another goal to Ohio Valley but responded when Cozzolino scored another unassisted effort with 1:42 minutes left on the clock to tie things up at five.
Â
However, there was still time left in the first period for the team from Vienna to score once more before halftime, as the Fighting Scots took a 6-5 lead into the break.
Â
After the break, the Senators came back strong, scoring three goals to begin the second half. Two of the goals came from the junior Fagan, the first unassisted and the second from
Kaitlin Howell.
Â
Shaw then scored and Cozzolino responded from an Ohio Valley goal with her fourth of the game to put D&E up 9-7.
Â
Ohio Valley would score three more goals, but the Senators would answer back each time the visitors would add a tally.
Â
Within the last 15 minutes, Fagan would score two more goals assisted by Cozzolino both times.
Â
With 6:29 remaining, Shaw essentially clinched the games for the Senators, completing her hat trick on a goal set up by Toni Washington.
Â
The Fighting Scotts found one last goal with 31 seconds left but it didn't stop the Senators from getting their first win of the season.
Â
D&E's goalkeeper
Ebele De La Bay Coffie had seven saves total, five in the first have, two in the second to help the Senators to their first win in over two seasons.
Â
Shaw led the Senators with six ground balls in the game. She also had four caused turnovers.
Â
Casey Johnson led the way defensively for the Senators, forcing seven turnovers while scooping up four ground balls and a draw control.
Â
Savannah Stanford led the Senators in draw controls, finishing with five, while also forcing three turnovers and scooping up three more ground balls.
Â
Cozzolino and Fagan were second on the team with four draw controls each.
Â
Davis & Elkins will play Ohio Valley once again on Thursday, this time in Vienna, W.Va. That game is set for a 4 p.m. start.
