WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The Davis & Elkins College Men's Tennis team fell in a heartbreaker to West Liberty Tuesday afternoon, dropping the non-conference match 5-4 to the Hilltoppers.
The Senators fell behind early, losing two of the three doubles matches. All of the matches were decided by 8-3 scores, as
Andrew Shand and
Tristram Spitsnaugle defeated Luke Flanagan and Vincent Huynh in No. 2 doubles for D&E's only point.
Once the match turned to singles play, the Senators tied things up rather quickly, as
Obert Matthew Mulyadi jumped out to a 6-2 victory in set one and won by retirement in the second set, defeating Daniel Nogareda in the No. 1 match.
After West Liberty took the next two matches, Davis & Elkins would answer back with two more singles victories. First,
Alejandro Meseguer defeated Nicholas Liddy in the No. 2 match with a pair of 6-2 set wins to cut the deficit to just one.
In the No. 6 match,
Mason Schoonover then defeated Zach Kirkwood to tie the match up at four wins apiece with his 6-4, 6-3 victory.
However, the Senators would be unable to claim the victory, as Shand fell in the final match. Despite the loss, Shand played Huynh well, claiming four points in each of his set losses.
The Senators will now put their sights on the regular season finale, as the Senators travel to Cedarville. The match is set of an opening serve of 10 a.m. in Cedarville.
