FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Davis & Elkins College Softball team's bats came alive on day two of their spring break trip south, as the Senators swept Fayetteville State 8-3 and 16-4 to improve to 4-0 on the road trip.
It took a little while for the Senators to get warmed up in game one, as both teams were held scoreless into the fourth inning.
Alyssa Cairns broke the tie with a double to right center, scoring
Kelsie Millner for the game's first run.
Cairns would then score on a ball in play by
Brittany Wade. The Senators would add one more run when
Morgan Tandarich scored on a bases loaded fielder's choice ground out by
Sydney Turner.
The Broncos would score one in the sixth on a homerun, the only run allowed by
Allie Lapallo in six innings of work, as she earned her third victory of the season.
Davis & Elkins would answer back in the seventh, adding five runs of insurance to go on top of the 3-1 lead.
Wade started the scoring by earning a bases loaded walk that scored
Jordan Crawford.
Rhetta Persinger then doubled to left field to score Cairns and Millner.
Lapallo would then cap off the scoring, adding to her cause with a single to left, scoring
Jade Allee and Wade.
Katelyn Cobb would come in to pitch the seventh inning, allowing two runs from the Broncos.
In game two, the Senators started off hot, as they scored three runs in the top of the first. Cairns started the scoring with a single to center that scored Crawford.
Millner, who moved to third on Cairns single, then scored on a passed ball and Cairns capped off the scoring on an RBI groundout by Persinger.
After Fayetteville State scored in the bottom of the first on an error, the Senators came back and blew open the game with nine runs in the second.
Turner would start the scoring by advancing home on a failed pickoff attempt.
After Crawford and
Katie Manson reached base, Millner hit a three-run shot for her first homerun of the season to make it 7-1.
The Senators then loaded the bases and
Alexis Smith cleared them with a double to right center, scoring Persinger, Wade and Cairns.
Turner then stepped up and hit a homerun with Smith on to extend the lead to 12-1.
Davis & Elkins would get two more runs in the third with a bases-loaded walk by Persinger and a sacrifice groundout from Smith with the bases still loaded that scored Millner.
After Fayetteville would add two in the third and a scoreless fourth, Smith would pick up two more RBIs with a single up the middle to score Tandarich and Cairns to cap the scoring for the Senators.
Millner would finish the game going 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs and three RBIs.
Smith would finish with a team-season high six RBIs in the game.
Victoria Krystynak pitched 3.1 innings for the win, allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits with three strikeouts. Allee pitched the final five outs in the run-rule contest, allowing one run on two hits.
The Senators will return to action on Wednesday, traveling to South Carolina to take on Anderson University. First pitch in the doubleheader is set for 5 p.m.
