ELKINS – The Davis & Elkins College Men's Lacrosse team fell to Wilmington (DE) 14-10 Thursday afternoon at Nuttall Field.
The Senators allowed four goals from the visitors in the first 5:25 and were unable to recover, trailing by as much as six before the comeback effort fell short.
Trevor Nailor put the Senators on the scoresheet at 9:20 in the first half with his second goal of the season on an unassisted effort.
After Wilmington answered with a goal to go up 5-1, the Senators would rally of three goals to end the first quarter and start the second quarter, cutting the deficit to just one.
Matthew Dyck scored on an assist from
Matt O'Dwyer to start the run, followed by
Brayden McGregor's first goal of the season.
O'Dwyer scored his ninth of the year to finish the mini run.
Wilmington answered back with five unanswered goals to end the half, taking a 10-4 lead into the break.
The Senators would outscore the visitors 4-2 in the third quarter, taking advantage of two man-up opportunities. O'Dwyer scored to start the third for D&E and McGregor then score on a man-up advantage for his second goal of the game.
Following a Wilmington goal, Dyck scored his 11
th of the season, followed up by O'Dwyer's 11
th of the season on a man advantage.
With the deficit cut to three, the Wildcats would score the next two goals to help secure the victory.
Kyle Durec and Hayden Sitler would score late on for the Senators before Wilmington closed out the game with their 14
th goal.
McGregor had a career game for the Senators, winning 16 faceoffs and 15 ground balls, while also causing five turnovers and scoring two goals. All but the goals were game highs for the Senators.
O'Dwyer led the way for the Senators on the scoresheet with a hat trick.
Davis & Elkins will now set their sights on a trip to the top of the state to face Wheeling Jesuit on Saturday. The game is set for a 1 p.m. start in Wheeling.
