ELKINS – The Davis & Elkins College Men's Lacrosse team fell in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference opener to No. 8 Mercyhurst 20-2 on Saturday at Nuttall Field.
The Senators would fall behind early but were in a tight battle through the first 15 minutes, as the top-ten program could only find two goals despite 17 shots in the first quarter.
However, the Lakers would double their lead in the first 19 seconds of the second quarter, scoring two quick goals to go up 4-0.
Matt O'Dwyer put the Senators on the scoresheet with 13:36 to go in the first half from close range after a pass from
Kyle Seago.
However, the hosts wouldn't get any closer, as Mercyhurst scored six goals to end the half and then added seven more in the third period.
O'Dwyer would get his second goal of the game with the first goal in the fourth quarter on an unassisted effort, but Mercyhurst would score three more to close out the game.
Davis & Elkins was outshot in the game 65-20, with the Senators putting eight of their shots on goal.
The Senators would have 18 turnovers in the game and lost the face-off battle 19-6. The Senators would also have six extra-man opportunities and failed to score on any in the contest.
Davis & Elkins will return to action next Saturday, as the Senators travel to Ohio Valley. The game is set for a 3 p.m. start in Vienna.
