WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Davis & Elkins College Baseball team fell in a doubleheader to California University of Pennsylvania Wednesday afternoon at Wild Things Park.
The Senators fell to a comeback effort by the Vulcans in game one, as Davis & Elkins lost 9-8 in eight innings.
Davis & Elkins jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, as
Johnny Liu scored on a sacrifice fly by
Shawn Pass and then
Connor Fitzgerald doubled home
Maxx Mahon.
After California answered back with a run in the bottom of the first, the Senators blew open a lead with a 5-run third inning.
Similar to the first, Fitzgerald doubled home Mahon to begin the scoring.
Hunter Thomas and
Chase DeGrood then singled home
Bragg Eastin and Fitzgerald to put the Senators up 5-1.
The inning would continue with
Frank Masella scoring Thomas on a ground out before DeGrood scored on a wild pitch.
Despite the big lead, the Senators would find themselves needing a run in the top of the seventh after the hosts scored two runs in the third and five runs in the sixth to take n 8-7 lead.
Fitzgerald would pick up another RBI as he scored
Robbie McKinney on a sacrifice fly to tie the game.
However, the Senators would be unable to find another run in the seventh and they would be held scoreless in the eighth. California (PA) then scored on a sacrifice fly in the eighth to walk off with victory.
In the loss,
Austin Main tossed five innings in a no decision, allowing five earned runs on four hits, while striking out six.
Max Larimore picked up the loss in one inning of relief work, giving up one run on two hits and a walk.
In game two, the Senators started strong with three runs in the top of the first. Mahon hit his first homerun as a Senator with a two-run shot that scored Liu. Thomas then doubled later in the inning to score Eastin.
The lead would not last long, as California (PA) scored six runs in the first and then added six more in the second.
Eastin would pick up an RBI single in the third, scoring McKinney, but the Vulcans would add a run as well in the bottom half.
The Vulcans would also add three runs in the fifth and three in the sixth.
Steven White and Fitzgerald would have RBI singles in the sixth and seventh, scoring Thomas and Mahon, respectively. However, the Senators would be unable to cover the gap, falling 19-6.
Mahon led the way for the Senators in the game, going 4-for-4 in the contest.
Brent McMillion picked up the loss, giving up six runs on three hits and three walks.
The Senators will return to action on Friday with the first of four games in Thomasville, North Carolina. Davis & Elkins will face Lock Haven with a first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
