Softball Drops Doubleheader to Open Season

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Davis & Elkins College Softball team dropped both games in its season opener on Saturday, falling 11-0 in both contests to Christopher Newport.
 
In both games, the Senators gave up two big innings and the offense combined for only eight hits in the two games.
 
In the first contest, the Senators gave up six runs in the second inning and then the hosts added five more runs in the fourth inning.
 
Rhetta Persinger, Jordan Crawford, Alyssa Cairns and Ryn Boelter all had a hit in the game for D&E. Amy Fincham also had a walk to total all five base runners for the Senators.
 
Allie Lapallo picked up the loss, giving up 11 runs on eight hits in 3.1 innings.
 
In the second contest, Christopher Newport jumped out to a lead with seven runs in the first and then the Captains added four in the second inning.
 
Katie Manson had two hits for the Senators in the game, while Crawford and Boelter also had a hit each in the second game. Cairns had a walk.
 
Victoria Krystynak picked up the loss, allowing seven runs, five earned, on three hits and seven walks in 2.2 innings.
 
The Senators will look to rebound on Sunday as they travel to Norfolk State to take on the Spartans. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m. in Norfolk.
