PHILIPPI, W.Va. – The Davis & Elkins College Men's Soccer team fell to Alderson Broaddus 2-0 Saturday night in Great Midwest Athletic Conference play, officially being eliminated from postseason contention.
The Senators fell behind early, as the referee awarded a penalty to the hosts in the sixth minute. Daniel Yague stepped up for the Battlers and beat
Everton Carvalho as the Senators went down 1-0.
Following a lightning delay of over a half an hour after the spot kick goal, play was resumed. Less than 15 minutes later on the clock, the Senators fell behind 2-0, as Nevado Elliot scored for Alderson Broaddus.
The Senators had their only shot on goal in the first half stopped, while Carvalho also made one first half save.
In the second half, the Senators controlled the run of play, firing eight shots to the Battlers three.
Davis & Elkins was also awarded a penalty in the second half, but Pedro Bassin's effort was stopped in the 72
nd minute.
Overall, the Senators would have four shots stopped in the second half.
In the 13 minutes following the failed penalty kick for the Senators,
Cesar Matteo Ghezzi received a yellow card and then a red card for a second yellow, which saw the visitors reduced to 10 men in the 85
th minute.
Davis & Elkins received another red in the 88
th minute, as
Pedro Bassin Nunes was sent off for a hard-missed slide tackle.
The Senators will close their season out on Tuesday, as Davis & Elkins hosts Ohio Valley at Nuttall Field. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. following senior day festivities.
