XENIA, Ohio – The Davis & Elkins College Softball team advanced to the final day of the G-MAC Tournament with a pair of shutout wins from
Allie Lapallo to defeat Cedarville 3-0 and Malone 1-0.
In game one on the day, the Senators had to face top seeded Cedarville and avenged a shutout loss in the last meeting by beating the Yellow Jackets 3-0 off a superb performance from Lapallo.
After a scoreless first, the Senators capitalized on a pair of hits in the bottom half of the lineup from
Sydney Turner and
Katie Manson, along with a walk from
Samantha Smith to load the bases.
Alyssa Cairns then stepped up and ripped a single down the left field line to score Turner and Smith to give the Senators a 2-0 lead.
The Senators would get a pair of runners on in the third with a hit from
Brittany Wade and Turner's hit by pitch, but D&E would strand two of their five total baserunners left on in the game.
It didn't matter though, as Lapallo tossed a gem for the Senators. Lapallo scattered three hits and a pair of walks in a complete game shutout for the victory over the G-MAC Regular Season Champions.
In the fifth,
Kelsie Millner extended the Senators advantage, leading off with a single. After moving to second on a wild pitch and third on a throwing error on a failed pickoff attempt, Millner scored on a sacrifice fly by Wade.
Lapallo picked up her 14th win of the season, while five Senators had a hit in the game.
In game two, the Senators found themselves in a pitching duel.
The Senators took a while to get going against the Pioneers, failing to get their first hit until the fourth inning. However, Millner started off the fourth in a big way with a triple to right center.
Davis & Elkins would take the lead in the next at bat with a double to right center by
Danielle Norton.
The Senators were unable to get the next run in, stranding the baserunner at third.
In the fifth inning, Smith had a one out single and
Katie Manson followed it up with another single for the top of the lineup. Cairns then singled to load the bases.
However, Millner and Norton both reached on fielder's choices as Smith was out at home for out two and Cairns was out at third to end the inning.
The stranded baserunners wouldn't matter though, as the Senators defense, led by Lapallo, shutout the Pioneers. Lapallo picked up win 15 of the season, allowing just five hits with two strikeouts.
The Senators will play Kentucky Wesleyan at 11 a.m. on Sunday, needing to win two games over the Panthers to earn the G-MAC Tournament Championship and the NCAA Automatic Qualifying bid.
