ELKINS – The Davis & Elkins College Men's Lacrosse team earned its first ever Great Midwest Athletic Conference victory on Saturday as the Senators defeated Ohio Valley 17-11 for the program's third win of the season.
Matt O'Dwyer got things started for the Senators with the opening goal four minutes into the contest, taking a pass from
Patrick Schneck to beat the goalkeeper for his 25
th goal of the season.
However, Ohio Valley would score three of the next four goals around an unassisted effort from
Mike Tokar, as the visitors led 3-2 after 15 minutes.
The lead would be short-lived for the visitors, as
Matthew Dyck scored 27 seconds into the second quarter to tie the game up at three.
Connor Shantz would then follow it up with two goals, including one on the man advantage to put the Senators back in front.
Zach Cotoni and Tokar then added goals before Ohio Valley scored their only goal of the second quarter.
Shantz and Cotoni would add another goal each to close out a 7-1 second quarter, as the Senators took a 9-4 lead into the break.
Coming out to start the third quarter, O'Dwyer and Tokar would score to extend the Senators lead to 11-4.
Ohio Valley would score two of the next three, with Dyck's second of the game coming between them. Dyck would then complete his hat trick just before the end of the third quarter.
Early in the third,
Kyle Durec gave the Senators their largest lead of the game with his seventh of the year. After two goals from the visitors, Durec would add his eighth of the season.
Later in the quarter, Tokar would score his team-high fourth goal of the game.
Ian Nelson would close out the scoring for the Senators with the final goal of the game with just under a minute remaining.
Defensively,
Kyle Seago stopped eight shots and earned his third win of the season.
Quinn Beavis had a big game for the Senators, winning 17 faceoffs, including nine ground balls that he scooped for a team high.
Cotoni had seven ground balls, while O'Dwyer and
Brett Metheny finished with five each.
Jordan Waddell and Dyck had four each.
Cotoni, O'Dwyer, Metheny,
Noah Jessey and
Samuel Behrens each finished with two caused turnovers in the game.
The Senators will now set their sights on the final game of the regular season, as the Senators host Alderson Broaddus on Tuesday at Nuttall Field. The Game is set for a 7 p.m. start following senior night festivities.
