OWENSBORO, Ky. – After sweeping Kentucky Wesleyan on Saturday, the Davis & Elkins College Softball team fell to the Panthers on Sunday 6-1 and 5-3, splitting the Great Midwest Athletic Conference series.
The Senators struggled early in game one, as the hosts jumped out to a five-run lead in the bottom of the first inning after the Senators had stranded two runners in the opening frame.
The game settled quickly and the Senators would be the next team to score, but not until the sixth inning, when
Rhetta Persinger hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring
Kelsie Millner.
Kentucky Wesleyan would answer with a run in the bottom of the sixth and the Senators were held scoreless in the seventh, falling in the first game of the day.
Allie Lapallo picked up the loss, giving up five earned runs while striking out two batters.
In game two, the Senators found themselves trailing 4-0 heading to the fifth, as the Panthers scored one in the second and hit a three-run homerun in the third.
Daniel Norton would reach on a fielding error in the fifth inning and
Alyssa Cairns would come around to score, while Millner would move to third.
The Senators then added their second run of the inning when Norton stole second and Millner took home on an error by the shortstop for the Panthers.
However, the Senators wouldn't get any closer, as Kentucky Wesleyan score in the bottom of the sixth to take a 5-2 lead.
Brittany Wade would cut the deficit back to two runs with a solo homerun in the seventh, but the Senators were unable to generate any more offense.
Sara Tobin was given the loss, allowing four of the five runs in the game by the Panthers.
The Senators will look to rebound on Wednesday, as they travel to Alderson Broaddus for an important G-MAC doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Philippi.
