ELKINS – The Davis & Elkins College Women's Lacrosse team fell in its home opener to Walsh 21-6 on a rainy Saturday at Nuttall Field.
Despite the soggy weather, the Senators started strong, as
Surelys Baez made a couple key saves in the first two minutes and helped D&E move the other direction.
Olivia Owens then scored on a quick clearance break, taking a pass from
Savannah Stanford and putting it in the back of the net for the opening goal of the game 3:32 into the contest.
However, the Senators would fall behind as Walsh answered back with the next 10 goals to take a commanding lead.
Gabby Fagan would end the run from Walsh, scoring two of the next three goals, cutting the deficit to 11-3.
The visitors would answer back over the final eight minutes, scoring four more to take a 15-3 lead into the break.
After an early second-half goal by Walsh,
Olivia Owens picked up two-straight goals, including one on the woman advantage, to complete her hat trick on the day.
Owens would add one more goal later in the contest, splitting the final five goals from the Cavaliers.
Sonja Skinner,
Kathleen Shaw and Toni Washington would share the team high with three ground balls each.
Morgan Graham also had two ground balls and led the team with four caused turnovers and three draw controls.
Natalie Green was second on the team with two caused turnovers. Shaw and Fagan had two draw controls each.
Baez finished with 16 saves in the game and also had a ground ball and caused turnover in her first start of the year.
The Senators will return to action, next Sunday, hosting Ursuline in G-MAC play at Nuttall Field.
