OWENSBORO, Ky. – The Senators Softball program picked up a pair of Great Midwest Athletic Conference wins on Saturday in a sweep of Kentucky Wesleyan, winning 5-0 and 8-7.
The Senators started strong in game one, using a 3-run fourth inning, followed by a 2-run fifth inning, to take a commanding lead as
Allie Lapallo shut out the hosts.
Sydney Turner had a 2-RBI single to score
Rhetta Persinger and
Brittany Wade to start the scoring.
Samantha Smith then followed it up a few batters later to score Turner on a single to center.
In the fifth,
Danielle Norton hit a solo homerun to left center, making the game 4-0. Turner followed it up later in the inning with another RBI as she doubled to right field, scoring Wade.
In the circle, Lapallo scattered seven hits, while striking out three to earn the complete game shutout and her first of two win on the day.
Game two started out strong again for the Senators, as Norton opened the scoring with a double to right center, scoring
Kelsie Millner.
Persinger followed it up with a double down the left-field line to score Norton and give the Senators a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.
However, the Panthers would finally get on the scoreboard with a 6-run bottom of the first inning to take a commanding lead.
The Senators bats struggled in the middle innings and Kentucky Wesleyan added another run in the fourth to go up 7-2.
Davis & Elkins started their comeback in the sixth inning, with the first of four runs coming off of an
Alyssa Cairns single up the middle to score Smith.
Millner then had an RBI single to right center, scoring
Katie Manson, and Norton followed it up with a 2-RBI single, scoring Millner and Cairns.
Still needing a run,
Samantha Smith tied the game in the top of the seventh with a single to score Turner, forcing extra innings.
In the eighth, Persinger gave the Senators the go-ahead run with a single to score pinch runner
Morgan Tandarich.
Lapallo, who had entered the game in the fifth inning, sealed the victory, as she pitched four more scoreless innings, allowing just three hits, while striking out two.
The Senators will return to action on Sunday with the final two games of the series against the Panthers.
