Senators Defeat Lees-McRae 20-11 For First Home Win

ELKINS – The Davis & Elkins College Men's Lacrosse team earned the program's first ever home win on Saturday, defeating Lees-McRae College 20-11.
 
The Senators started out strong scoring five goals in the first quarter to take a 5-1 lead. Zach Cotoni started the scoring with his fifth of the year in an unassisted effort at 12:41.
 
Following a goal from Lees-McRae, Mike Tokar scored his first collegiate goal for the Senators in what turned into a breakout game for the freshman.
 
Connor Shantz and Cotoni would add the next two goals before Tokar scored his second of the game and Jordan Waddell scored his fourth goal of the season to close out the first 15 minutes.
 
Following a pair of Lees-McRae goals to start the second, Matt O'Dwyer put his name on the score sheet with his first of three goals in the second quarter.
 
Shantz would score two more goals and Tokar would add his third of the game with 6:24 remaining in the second quarter.
 
Kyle Durec, who had a huge game in the faceoff circle with 19 wins, scored on the man advantage to put Davis & Elkins up 13-4 heading into the half. Durec would also lead the Senators with 12 ground balls in the game.
 
12 seconds into the third, Cotoni would add his third of four goals in the game with another unassisted effort after scooping up the ground ball on the faceoff. Cotoni would finish with 10 ground balls.
 
O'Dwyer and Shantz would add to their tallies as the teams traded goals through the middle of the third.
 
Tokar would then reel off the next two goals, including one in a behind the back effort, matching an individual season high and one shy of the school record with five goals in a game.
 
 Ian Nelson and Cotoni would round out the scoring for the Senators.
 
Shantz would finish with a team-high eight points, scoring four goals and four assists. Patrick Schneck would also have four assists to share the team high.
 
Behind Tokar's five goals, O'Dwyer and Cotoni would join Shantz with four goals.
 
Noah Jessey and Michael Holstein would finish with two caused turnovers each, sharing the team high.
 
In goal, Kyle Seago finished with 11 saves in 45 minutes, allowing just six goals against for his second win.
 
Davis & Elkins will return to action on Tuesday, traveling to Pittsburgh to take on No. 10 Seton Hill. The game is set for a 3 p.m. start.
