ELKINS – The Davis & Elkins College Men's Soccer team picked up a big win in Great Midwest Athletic Conference play, knocking off league leaders Cedarville 3-1 Saturday night at Nuttall Field.
The Senators jumped out to a flying start as
Tim Staerz fired home just 82 seconds into the match to give the hosts the lead. Staerz took a pass from Mouafo and finished it for his first goal of the season.
D&E held the margin for the next 28 minutes before extending the lead on Staerz's second goal of the game. Staerz hit a solid strike off of a rebound to beat Paulo Pinto for the second time and double the Senators lead.
The two-goal margin didn't last long as the Senators gave up a penalty just two minutes later. Joel Twinem stepped up and finished in the right corner to beat
Hedi Mehnaoui, the goalkeeper's only blemish on the night.
Mehnaoui finished with three saves in the match.
The score remained 2-1 for the majority of the contest. The Senators had a penalty claim late in the first half and the Yellow Jackets narrowly missed a couple opportunities early in the second half.
However, in the 84th minute,
Alex Samarzich capped off the victory for the Senators after taking a pass from Staerz on a through ball and flicking it over Pinto for his first goal of the season.
The Senators were outshot 16-12, but both teams put five shots on goal.
With the win, the Senators knocked off the conference leaders for the second straight match after dispatching Ohio Valley 2-0 on Thursday. D&E is the only undefeated team left in G-MAC play.
Davis & Elkins will return to action on Thursday with the first of three road games. The Senators will face Kentucky Wesleyan with kickoff scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
