WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The Davis & Elkins College Men's Basketball team held No. 1 West Liberty to a season low in a tightly contested 87-74 defeat on Wednesday night at the ASRC Center.
The Senators led early on and kept close to the top-ranked team in the country throughout the game, holding the Hilltoppers well below their averages for the season. D&E was in striking distance late, before fouling widened the margin in the final minute.
The Hilltoppers previous low in points was 117 and they averaged 126 heading into the game. West Liberty also averaged 62.5 points in the first half this season. The Senators held them to 38.
The Senators tough defense held the Hilltoppers 12 points below their shooting average headed into the game and went even with West Liberty on the glass, after the hosts entered the game outrebounding opponents by 12.0 rebounds per game.
Davis & Elkins was led by
Kevin Bracy-Davis for the second straight game, as the senior scored 15 points to go along with eight rebounds and two assists.
Kevin Simpson and
Jordan McElveen also joined Bracy-Davis in double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Rickenjee Bellevue led the Senators on the glass, bringing down 12 rebounds. Bellevue missed a double-double by one point, scoring nine along with four assists, two blocks and a steal.
Both teams were fairly even in shooting on the night, with the Senators holding a slight advantage from beyond the arc, while the Hilltoppers had slightly higher numbers from the field and at the line. The teams also split the rebounds even, recording 39 each.
Turnovers were the big difference in the game, as West Liberty capitalized on 18 from the Senators and turned them into 27 points at the opposite end.
Davis & Elkins will return to action on Sunday in Murfreesboro, North Carolina, as the Senators take on Chowan University. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.
