ELKINS – The Davis & Elkins College Women's Soccer team knocked off the Great Midwest Athletic Conference leaders, Ursuline College, 1-0 on Saturday as the Senators closed out their regular season home schedule.
On a cold and windy afternoon, the Senators came out fired up and controlled most of the opening 30 minutes. D&E had six corners and six shots, including a shot off of the post from
Asheli Freed that nearly gave the Senators the lead in the 12th minute.
The sixth corner of the afternoon for D&E proved to be a good one, and it stemmed from a blocked shot out of play from
Katrina Giantsopoulos.
From the corner,
Jessica Woodbyrne whipped in a cross to the back half of the box, where
Alyssa Jacobs headed back across goal and into the net for the lead, beating Helen Jazzar.
For Jacobs, who had just subbed on moments earlier, it was her first goal of the season.
With the hosts leading, the league leaders then started their comeback effort, but were met by
Lauren Hill in goal for the Senators. Hill made eight saves in the match, including several quality chances from Ursuline.
Following the goal from the Senators, Hill would make three stops to preserve a 1-0 lead into the break.
Coming out of the half, Hill had to push an early effort onto the cross bar and came up with a couple more diving efforts.
Senior
Kaitlyn Buoni then nearly gave the Senators a two goal advantage, but Jazzar also was able to make a fingertip save that pushed Buoni's shot onto the crossbar, where it bounced down and away from goal.
Moments later, Hill was called to make another leaping save to put a ball over the crossbar and out for a corner. The Senators would defend everything else the rest of the way, keeping Ursuline from putting another shot on target.
D&E will wrap up the season on Tuesday with a trip to rival Alderson Broaddus. A Senators win or tie at AB would clinch the third or fourth seeds and a home game in the quarterfinals of next week's opening round of the G-MAC Tournament.
